5 Signs Your Dog or Cat Isn't Drinking Enough Water

Cats in particular evolved from desert-dwelling ancestors and have a weak thirst drive — many drink far less than they should, especially on dry food. Dogs are less prone to this but can slip into it too, particularly in hot weather or as they age. Here are five signs worth watching for.

1. Small, dark, or infrequent urine

This is usually the earliest sign. Concentrated urine means the kidneys are conserving water because not enough is coming in.

2. Dry or tacky gums

Gently press a finger to the gum — it should feel wet, not tacky. Tacky gums are a simple, quick hydration check you can do at home.

3. Skin that's slow to spring back

Gently lift the skin between the shoulder blades. In a well-hydrated pet it snaps back almost immediately; in a dehydrated one it settles back slowly.

4. Low energy or reduced appetite

Mild chronic dehydration often shows up first as "just not themselves" — less playful, sleeping more, picking at food.

5. They avoid the water bowl entirely

Standing water in an open bowl goes flat and can pick up dust, food debris, and bacteria within hours — many cats will simply stop drinking from it rather than tolerate the taste.

The simple fix

Moving, filtered water solves most of this on its own — it stays cooler, tastes fresher, and mimics the running water cats instinctively prefer. Our Stainless Steel Automatic Pet Water Fountain keeps water circulating and filtered around the clock, and the Feeding & Water collection has bowls and mats to go with it.
